Molokini Crater in Maui boasts some of the most unique geological features in the world. Not only is it a marine preserve, but it is also a federally owned and protected Seabird sanctuary. The two nesting birds that most frequent the areas are the Wedge-Tailed Shearwater and the Bulwer’s Petrel. The visibility in this beautiful crater is often 150 feet deep and there are an estimated 250 species of fish and 38 hard coral species. The humuhumunukunukuapua’a, which is Hawaii’s state fish, can often be spotted at the crater. You may even see moray eels, octopus and reef sharks. From the months of December-April our guests also frequently see majestic humpback whales on their boat ride to and from the crater. The waters surrounding the area are part of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary. Considered to be an underwater paradise by many, it is no wonder that Molokini is one of the most popular dive and snorkeling sites in Hawaii. Many of the tour boats conveniently leave from Ma’alaea harbor which is great whether you are staying on either the Westside or South side of Maui. You can the crater year round, however, the optimal time of day to visit is in the early morning before the trade winds start blowing. The only way to enjoy a Molokini snorkeling excursion is by taking a boat tour. You can choose a family-friendly catamaran or a fast-paced exhilarating zodiac raft. Some of the tours offer barbecue lunch while others offer a deli lunch. All of the tours include continental breakfast, snorkel gear, and flotation devices. Most excursions go to two snorkeling sites.

We believe in protecting our environment and have partnered with 1% for the planet in order to donate a percentage of our sales each year to a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to protecting the environment. We also recommend using a reef safe sunscreen as chemical ingredients in traditional sunscreens have been proven to harm coral reefs. Some of our guests avoid sunscreen altogether and just cover up with protective gear such as rash guards and hats. Snorkeling at Molokini Crater is the main highlight of many of our guest’s vacations to Maui and one that is not to be missed.
